Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 ended the story that James Gunn to tell with these wonderful characters. It was a wonderfully great ending, but we all know Marvel Studios isn’t done with some of the Guardians team just yet. I guess we will see it one day Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 4and that’s something Gunn is really excited to see at some point down the line.
Yes, you might think Gunn is a little protective of these characters, but he’s not. He got to tell the whole story that he wanted to tell, and now he can’t wait to see what another director will do. During an interview with the New York Times, he said:
“Whatever Marvel does with those characters, I can’t wait. I hope they use them. I can’t wait to see another director take on the Guardians and hope they do it in a way that takes ownership of the characters. But I feel good, I feel happy.”
However, there are some characters you won’t see again unless they are recast. Both Zoe Saldana AND Dave Bautista they made it clear that they’re done and transitioning from the character of Gamora and Drax. Gunn talked about it, saying:
“Both Zoe [Saldaña] and Dave [Bautista] they’ve been very clear that they won’t continue – likewise, me, actually. Chris [Pratt] he is open to doing more things, although I think he needs to be convinced. It changes a few things: like, I wasn’t going to have Dave in the post-credits scene. But I’m not sure he would have changed much beyond that.
He went on to talk about Peter Quill’s arc, the one he wanted to tell and completed, saying:
“The story arc with Peter Quill, in some ways, can be seen as one of many people who have experienced childhood trauma. He was at his mother’s bedside when she died, and he escaped and went into space – which, to other people, might be shut out from the world – and stayed there for a long time until he realized as an adult that he needed to get back to Earth. That, for me, has always been his journey.
The final tag at the end of Guardians vol. 3 he said that Star-Lord will be back, but there’s no doubt that it will be a long time before that happens. Are you excited about the future of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise? Is there a director out there that you would like to see play?
