Kathleen Kennedy explains why Rian Johnson and Taika Waititi’s STAR WARS project is taking so long to make

There are many Star Wars film projects that have since been announced Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, but Lucasfilm has yet to actually produce one. Two of the most talked about projects among fans are those developed by Rian Johnson AND Taika Waititi.

Johnson was originally supposed to start shooting his film five years ago, and then… nothing. So Waititi’s film was supposed to be the next Star Wars film to be made, but that’s not very close to happening, and the director has taken on other projects. It was supposed to go into production in early 2023, but there’s still no completed script.

Well, during a recent interview with Empire, the president of Lucasfilm Kathleen Kennedy offered an update on these projects alongside the Lando and Rogue Squadron series, saying:

“Rian and I talk all the time. [He] keep getting more and more successful and keep pushing things further and further back. We will find out one day. And Taika is working away. He’s alone, and he won’t be mad at me for saying it, slow. We have a couple of acts, we need a third. And ‘Lando’ is still on the books, and ‘Rogue Squadron’ is still on the books. We just want them to be great.”

Johnson previously said he meets with Lucasfilm regularly and talks with Kennedy about his project: “I stayed close to Kathleen [Kennedy] and we often meet and talk about it. It is only at this point a question of the schedule and when it can happen. It would break my heart if I’m done, if I can’t go back to that sandbox at some point.

Talking about his plan to explore new characters in his films, he said: “We are doing something beyond traditional characters. What does it look like? For me, the blue sky element is what impressed me the most. I know how I’m getting there, and what’s fun for everyone in George Lucas movies, is to figure out, “What’s the next step?” It really makes you think and understand what is the essence of Star Wars it is for me and what it will be like moving forward.

As for Waititi, he spoke about what he’s trying to do with Star Wars, saying, “Look, I think the Star Wars universe is expanding, it has to expand. I don’t think I’m of any use in the Star Wars universe to make a movie where everyone’s like, “Oh great, well, those are the Millennium Falcon blueprints, ah that’s Chewbacca’s grandma.” It all stands on its own, it’s great, although I’d love to take something new and make some new characters and just expand the world, otherwise it feels like it’s a very small story.

Maybe one day these Star Wars the projects will be implemented. In the meantime, we have the Disney+ shows to enjoy and then there are the directors’ movies James Mangold, Dave FiloniAND Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy.

Kennedy recently said that Lucasfilm is now looking to release a Star Wars movie every three to four years. He explained that this will take the pressure off meeting deadlines and explained: “We have to organize it. It’s much better to tell the truth, that we’ll make these movies when they’re ready to be made and release them when they’re ready to be released.

We’ll just have to wait and see what happens!
