Christopher Nolan offers insight into auditioning for Cillian Murphy’s Batman

As many of you already know, before Cillian Murphy was cast as Scarecrow in Christopher Nolan’S Batman begins, auditioned for the role of Bruce Wayne/Batman. During a recent interview with EW, Nolan said he wants to work with Murphy and offered information about his audition for Batman.

Nolan recalled seeing Murphy in the paper he was talking about 28 days later and he really liked the way it looked, so he took it for a screentest.

Murphy said he didn’t feel like he was “Batman material” and explained, “It just felt right and right that he was Cristiano Bale for that part. But I remember the buzz of trying on the gown and being directed by you. Those tests were high production values.

Nolan went on to talk about the screentest, saying, “I think we both knew you weren’t going to end up playing Batman. But I really wanted to go on set with you, I wanted to take you to a movie. We did those screen tests very elaborately, on 35mm, with a small set. There was just an electric vibe in the crew when you started performing.

Nolan went on to say that he made sure WB execs came to see Cillian perform in the audition: “We did two scenes — there was a Bruce Wayne scene and a Batman scene — and I made sure execs came down and they looked at what you were doing on set.

He knew he wasn’t going to play Batman, but he wanted him to play Scarecrow. The director continued: “Everyone was so excited to see you play that when I said to them, ‘Okay, Christian Bale is Batman, but how about Cillian to play Scarecrow?’ there was no dissent. All previous Batman villains had been played by major movie stars: Jack Nicholson, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jim Carrey, that sort of thing. It was a big leap for them and it was really just based on that test. So that’s how you played Scarecrow.

Cillian was damn perfect in that role and gave a great performance. Murphy had long wanted the lead role in one of Nolan’s films. He said he “was desperate” to direct one of his films, and he got his chance with the upcoming film Oppenheimerwhich movie buffs are very excited about.
