While they are on the road, Negan is a wanted man being hunted by New Babylon Marshal Perlie Armstrong (Caius Charles). She’s been following Negan and there’s even a wanted poster that pops up in the trailer.

Charles spoke about New Babylon’s new position saying it is “one such state that has come together to try to put the world back together. My primary job, my primary goal and objective, is to bring justice to our land, our community, to protect him. And one of the biggest challenges is getting this guy named Negan.”

The character, Armstrong, is described as a devoted family man who is ruthless and relentless in the pursuit of what he believes is justice, but “complications come” as he hunts down Negan.

Series creator and showrunner Eli Jorné spoke about Negan and Maggie’s relationship on the series saying:

“It’s interesting because we see a very raw level of trauma that we know happened between Maggie and Negan. In Dead City, we actually have the ability to do that [ask], ‘What is this? What does it take to cross it?’ And more than anything, it’s a chance for us to be forced together in this mission. The tension and immovable things are still very much there. We’ve seen them cross paths so often, but on this show, it’s really this tunnel that they’re trapped in to deal with things they might have run from, especially what Maggie ran away from and what Negan ran away from.[‘s presence] breed for her. It’s like an exercise in intimacy with the worst person.

Jorné further explained the complexity of their relationship this time around:

“It’s the next chapter in Maggie and Negan’s story, and so, in that sense, there’s a lot of pain and trauma and loss on both sides and how do you manage that? How does Maggie look into Negan’s face every day and remember what she did to the love of her life? That’s still a huge part of the show. For anyone who’s watched The Walking Dead all these years and connected to those characters, we’re continuing the story, growing and evolving and deepening it in a whole new landscape.

The dynamic between these two characters will be interesting for the creative team to play with. There are also many other characters that will be introduced in the show and speaking about that, Jorné said:

“There are a lot of new characters you’re going to meet and I think they’re all unique and exciting in new ways. They all bring something new to the universe and this world. And they bring something new from Maggie and Negan too, because Maggie and Negan are always at the heart of it all.”

The Walking Dead: The Dead City will premiere Sunday, June 18 at 10 p.m. ET. It will air on AMC and AMC+. Subsequent episodes will move to the 9 p.m. ET timeslot. Watch the trailer below! Do you think these Walking Dead the spin-offs will be as successful as the original flagship series.
