Director James Gunn clarified that this final installment, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, will wrap up our favorite messy Guardian gang storyline, and is bound to make us shed a tear in the process. The story revolves around Rocket Raccoon (voiced by Bradley Cooper), and tells his origin story, as well as the final chapter of the current timeline with his friends.

But as it turns out, Gunn’s plans for the GOTG franchise always had Rocket at their core, and the story that takes place in this movie was originally meant to be a Rocket and Groot (Vin Diesel) standalone film.
Gunn spoke to io9 Gunn spoke to io9 about the Los Angeles franchise this week, saying:
“My journey into Guardians initially was Marvel talking to me about maybe doing Guardians of the Galaxy. They had actually already made some drawings with Rocket. And I thought, ‘Boy, this can be silly. This could be like Bugs Bunny in the middle of The Avengers.’ I’m like, ‘How can I not make it silly?’
“And I thought, ‘Well, okay, if there was a talking space raccoon, how could it exist?’ And as I was thinking about it, I started thinking about how this was the saddest creature in the universe, and that was actually the seed for me for the whole Guardians trilogy. This has been my road, this foundation of just isolation and sadness, and all these characters are isolated and sad. So I knew what Rocket’s backstory was from that moment before I came up with the rest of that stuff vol. 1. It was the first thing that came to my mind.”
Gunn went on to talk about why he withheld the story until this third film:
“I always thought it was a third movie thing because I thought we had to tell Peter Quill’s story first and then get into Rocket’s story. I think the only question was was this going to be a Rocket and Groot movie or was it going to be Guardians 2—because originally I was going to do it like Rocket and Groot.
Things ended up working just the way they were supposed to, like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is getting some of the best reviews in Marvel history! The movie hits theaters this Friday! Already have your tickets?
