I thought the cut we saw was great, but of course I’d be interested to see what was cut from the film because it turns out the original cut was over four hours long! Director Andy Muschietti he shared this little detail himself in a Q&A after the screening, and when asked about the elements he was forced to cut from the film, he said:
“Well, if you see the four-hour version of this movie, which was my first assembly, you’ll see what I left out. I’m definitely happier with this version than the four-hour version. Just like it’s something that excites you and you start improvising with the actors and suddenly you have a scene that’s doubled the length that was timed when they were timing the script. But it happens all the time. IT was also three and a half hours, and IT: Chapter Two was like five hours. So you have to face the montage and say, “Okay. We have to remove an hour and a half of this film, and how is that going to happen?” In the end it’s always fun. At the end of six months, it’s fun. At first it’s just chaos and whatever you start doing is wrong in hindsight Because it’s a trial and error and you try a lot of things.
It’s just the director’s process of getting the film down in the editing room to the perfect shape it needs to be. Muschietti delivers one of the best DC movies to have been made, and no matter the length, audiences are going to have a great time. There is so much I want to say! There are some really mind-blowing things included in the film that I didn’t expect.
The director went on to say that the theatrical version of the film to be released remains the “best version of the film,” but also teased “interesting” deleted scenes, saying:
“A lot of things are very interesting things, but they kind of undermine the propulsion, the pacing of the film, which is something you always have to keep in mind. Decisions you have to make.”
Speaking of those scenes, producer Barbara Muschietti noted, “Some of it was filmed and maybe one day it will see the light of day.” So, that’s pretty cool!
“Worlds collide The flash when Barry uses his superpowers to travel back in time to change the events of the past. But when her attempt to save his family inadvertently alters the future, Barry is trapped in a reality where General Zod has returned, threatening annihilation, and there are no superheroes to turn to. That is, unless Barry can convince a very different Batman to come out of retirement and rescue an imprisoned Kryptonian… though not the one he’s after. In the end, to save the world he’s in and return to the future he knows, Barry’s only hope is to run for his life. But will the ultimate sacrifice be enough to reset the universe?”
The flash will be released on June 23, 2023.
