During this year’s celebration of Star Wars, Lucasfilm made the announcement Dave Filoni would direct a great Star Wars film that will “close” the interconnected stories being told The Mandalorian, Boba Fett’s bookAND Ahsoka. This is an exciting project for fans of these Star Wars shows that is being described as a “New Republic vs. Imperial Remnant” story, and while we wait to see what exactly that will be, Filoni and Jon Favreau they’re talking about how the movie is going to be a mashup of different sources and characters and how they’re trying to figure out which characters they want to use.

While on EW Dagobah Expedition podcast, Filoni said, “We’re in the right area code. We’re definitely in the right space. I think it’s going to be a clamor of characters saying, ‘How do I get into this picture?’ And that’s what Jon and I discovered.”
Speaking about their growing Mandalorian universe and how this journey has played out for the creative team, Filoni said, “I think for a long time, as I’ve learned to work in this galaxy, it’s a long game, and if things go right, you can do more of your story. I think things broke in a good way for us and people liked the characters we created. So some opportunities presented themselves as we went along.”
When it comes to the setting of these stories set five years after the events of Return of the JediFiloni thinks it’s the perfect time frame to play and says, “Growing up with the original [films], Return of the Jedi it was the end. But then you’re always like: but what happens next? And then when Episode VII was set so many years later, when I was a kid, I never thought it would be so much later, but it made sense. He’s created an opening where you go, “Wow, so a lot of the stuff we knew before is probably in there.” How do we dig it?'”
Favreau then spoke of being inspired by the different sources they draw from for the film saying: “When I was younger, we didn’t have movies, but there were comics, there were novels, things that are wrapped up in [expanded universe] or Legends. Clearly, there are decisions that need to be made to bring it all together, but for us, I think one thing we can agree on is that the characters – as special as they are – the story has to drive who the characters are. “
Then there’s the fun part of crafting a big story like this and figuring out which characters to include! Favreau said, “We joke that it’s like we’re playing with action figures, like, ‘What’s in the box? Let’s play with what’s in the box!’ And that’s what you do when you’re playing and you’re a kid.”
As for which action figures to use to play, Favreau explains, “As we get deeper and deeper into this, you start having to really map things out and figure out what that story is, and then have those characters realize what their cycle is.” of growth and what is their mythical hero’s journey. These things have to fit together well. Otherwise, it won’t look Star Wars.”
Favreau went on to say, “That has always been George’s basis. He is a student of Joseph Campbell. How does the hero’s journey fit into the narrative? And so as we have more and more characters lined up, you have to figure out how those characters are evolving and if it ultimately feels like a Star Wars history.”
Favreau and Filoni have a strong sense of storytelling and have proven to be the best things to have happened to the Star Wars franchise in years. I have no doubt that the film they will develop together will be a great Star Wars movie!
