Damon Lindelof says he was asked to leave the STAR WARS movie he was developing

Damon Lindelof he has said in the past how much he would like to be involved with a Star Wars film and had this opportunity! Lucasfilm hired him and Justin Britt-Gibson two write the script for a film that was to be set later The Rise of Skywalker. It was during the Star Wars celebration that it was announced that this would be a Star Wars story that brings back Daisy Ridley as King.

Lindelof ended up leaving that project after handing in the script they had written and then Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight was brought in to work on the screenplay for the film, which is directed by Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy (Mrs. Marvel).

When previously speaking of his involvement with that Lindelof he said: “I will just say that for reasons I cannot elaborate on this Sunday morning, on this day, the degree of difficulty is extremely, extremely, extremely high. If it can’t be big, it shouldn’t exist. That’s all I’m going to say, because I have your own association with it, which is, it’s the first movie I ever saw sitting on my dad’s lap, age four, May of ’77. I think it’s possible that sometimes when you hold something in such great respect and esteem, you start walking into the kitchen and you’re just like, ‘Maybe I shouldn’t be cooking. Maybe I should just eat.’ We’ll just leave it at that.

Now, in a recent interview with Esquire, the writer has shared some exciting new details about his departure from the project. In fact, he says that he was asked to leave. Lindelof confirmed:

“I was in more negotiations to join the Star Wars universe. I joined the Star Wars universe and was asked to leave the Star Wars universe.”

I assume it was Kathleen Kennedy who asked him to leave. There are no reasons given as to why, but my guess is that the story he wanted to tell didn’t line up with what she wanted. She went on to say:

“Will I go back in line outside the club and try to get back in again? Sure. This movie was the Alpha and Omega, it’s the first movie I ever saw in a theater. I love all the storytelling in that world. What if all At first you can’t do it, try, try again, or again, try again, as Yoda would say”.

That must have been a blow to Lindelof. Eventually he gets to work on a Star Wars project and Lucasfilm tells him to leave. What a shitty experience that must have been.
