During Paramount Pictures’ presentation at CinemaCon, John Krasinsky debuted the first footage from his upcoming family fantasy comedy film SELF, and announced the full cast of A-list stars! Speaking about the film, Krasinski said he wanted to make a film for children in the same way he enjoyed watching it. ET AND The Goonies when he was growing up.

Ryan Reynolds, Steve Carelland Krasinksi were already cast in the film and will be joining them Matt Damon, Jon Stewart, Emily Blunt, Maya Rudolph, Sam Rockwell, Sebastian Maniscalco, Christopher Meloni, Richard Jenkins, Awkwafina AND Vince Vaughn.
Other previously announced actors include Krasinski, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Cailey Fleming, Louis Gossett Jr, Fiona Shaw, Alan S. Kim, AND Bobby Moynihan.
The film has a very Amblin-like feel to it and is a mix of CGI animation and live-action. The story follows a young girl (Fleming) who is able to see and interact with all the old imaginary friends of those around her. Imaginary friends who have been imagined and created and then discarded.
One of the imaginary friends is IF, and IF is a furry purple creature voiced by Steve Carrell. There are many other imaginary friend characters and they are voiced by the other cast members who have been announced.
Much of the footage shown was behind-the-scenes stuff, and Krasinski basically stepped in and played all the imaginary friends characters himself on set, which I thought was hilarious! The story is about a child’s journey to rediscover his imagination. It sounds like the film will be a fascinating and heartfelt exploration of childhood, and I can’t wait to watch it!
Reynolds described the film as “a live-action Pixar film” and Krasinski, who wrote and directed it, said, “I want this film to believe in something bigger… and get you through something bigger, it’s possible”.
I have a feeling this is going to be a great and entertaining movie that audiences will enjoy and will be released in theaters on May 24, 2024.
