Universal Pictures recently premiered the first trailer for Blumhouse’s upcoming horror film Exorcist: the believer. The footage was shown at CinemaCon and we were there to witness the director’s chilling horror David Gordon Greenit’s the next movie. It looks like it’s going to be a seriously dark and sinister horror film. It definitely seems to capture that crazed terror from the original film. You can watch us talk about the footage we saw here!

This reboot is described as a legacy sequel that will take place after the events of the original 1973 film. It will also be a trilogy, and this first film focuses on two young girls who get possessed at the same time. Director Green previously teased what we can expect from it, saying:

“I think we’ll learn from the production of the first one to see what applies as we evolve. She’s honoring Chris MacNeil and we’re looking into her 50 years later, so it’s a significant evolution in her character, but I think it’s going to be really fun to explore.

“We’re about to go on a very different kind of technical journey than Halloween. I don’t even necessarily classify it as a horror film, even though it’s very appealing to the horror, it’s psychological and dramatic. It doesn’t have the funny tension-breaker that Halloween would have, because you can’t lean into any of the more campy qualities that I think we enjoy from time to time in Halloween movies. It’s very earnest and quite direct, and I don’t know, I’m excited about it.”

The film is also the protagonist Leslie Odom Jr. as the “father of a possessed child. Desperate for help, he tracks down Mrs. Burstyn’s character. She is also the protagonist Elena Burstyn, who will reprise his role as Chris MacNeil from the original 1973 film. They are joined by Ann Dowd (Hereditary), Lydia Jewett (by Netflix Nightbooks), Raffaello Sbarge (Gaslit), and newcomer Olivia Mark.

Green is directing the trilogy for Universal, Blumhouse and Morgan Creek. The first film will be released in theaters on October 13, 2023.
