Kenneth Branagh is back to direct and star in a new movie based on Agatha Christie, but this time it’s a supernatural horror mystery story! The film is titled An obsession in Venice and is inspired by Christie’s novel Halloween party and Hercule Poirot finds himself embarking on a terrifying horror adventure.

The film is set in post-war Venice on the eve of All Saints’ Day, An obsession in Venice is “a terrifying mystery with the return of the celebrated detective, Hercule Poirot. Now retired and living in self-imposed exile in the most glamorous city in the world, Poirot reluctantly attends a séance in a rundown and haunted mansion. When one of the guests is murdered, the detective is thrust into a sinister world of shadows and secrets.
This is Branagh’s first horror film since directing Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein in 1994, and it looks like a great movie! Branagh said in a statement: “This is a fantastic development of the character of Hercule Poirot, as well as the Agatha Christie franchise. Based on a complex and little-known mystery story set on Halloween in a picturesquely captivating city, it’s an incredible opportunity for us, as filmmakers, and we’re relishing the opportunity to deliver something truly chilling for our loyal cinematic audience.

The ensemble cast includes Michelle Yeoh (Everything everywhere all at once). Kyle Allen (Rosaline), Camillo Cottin (Call my agent), Jamie Dornan (Belfast), Tina Fei (30 Rock), Jude Hill (Belfast), Al-Khan (6 Underground), Emma Lair (Mayor of Kingston), Kelly Reilly (Yellowstone), AND Richard Scamarico (The shadow of Caravaggio).
The screenplay for the film was written by Michael Green (Logan), and the film was shot at Pinewood Studios outside of London and on location in Venice. A Haunting in Venice will be released in theaters nationwide on September 15, 2023.
