Tom Rothman, chairman and CEO of Sony Motion Pictures, presented an excerpt from Ridley Scott’s Apple TV+ film, Napoleon tonight at CinemaCon.
Apple’s continued foray into the film has been a huge boon for Sony, which is distributing the film.
“It will be released on Thanksgiving with a robust theatrical window and strong marketing campaign before going to Apple TV+,” Rothman said. Unlike other studios, Sony does not have a streaming service, but sees itself more as an arms dealer when it comes to licensing films, but also takes on the role of distribution partner.

Rothman revealed at screenings at the Caesars Palace Coliseum theater how amazed he is that Scott still hasn’t won an Oscar for best director. “I know he can do things cinematically that filmmakers half his age can’t,” Rothman said of the 85-year-old filmmaker.
How is the footage? Let’s assume it will work Barry Lyndon Director Stanley Kubrick jealous. In the featured clip, Joaquin Phoenix’s title character commands the French army in a foggy, hazy, wintry epic battle with Russian and Austrian forces. Napoleon knew it was coming; he invited to attack. Many bayonets cut and soldiers fall into the icy water. Among other notable big battle pictures like Good heart And 1917 Napoleon stand apart.
“Make them think they have the high ground!” said the joker Oscar winner.
“Old school, big screen,” Rothman exclaimed of the footage.
“We trust you will give this film your maximum support,” Rothman told exhibitors, “because the broader meaning is clear: good for Apple, good for theaters — and it’s a spectacle on the big screen.
Assisted by Scott from a script by David Scarpa, Napoleon Phoenix stars as the French emperor and military leader. The film is an original and personal look at Napoleon’s origins and his swift, ruthless rise to emperor, seen through the prism of his addictive and often volatile relationship with his wife and one true love, Josephine (Vanessa Kirby). The film captures Napoleon’s famous battles, ruthless ambition and incredible strategic mind as an exceptional military leader and war visionary.
An Apple Studios production in association with Scott Free Productions, Napoleon is produced by Scott, Kevin Walsh, Mark Huffam and Phoenix, with Michael Pruss and Aidan Elliott serving as executive producers.
The film opens in theaters during Thanksgiving Week, beginning November 22.
