Lighting/Nintendo/Universal The movie Super Mario Bros made history this past weekend, scoring the world’s biggest premiere for an animated title. Now, after just nine days, it has another milestone to its name, breaking over $500 million to become the #1 release of 2023 worldwide.
Domestically, the film, directed by Aaron Horvath/Michael Jelenic, boxed tickets through Thursday. $260.3 million. The number is at the international cash register $248.4 millionthis is the global running total $508.7 million.

Super Mario Bros is the number 2 animated film worldwide since 2019. It caught up Demon Slayer: Mugen Train and is currently only behind Illumination/Universal Minions: The Rise of Gru ($942.5 million) – it will most likely surpass the latter as well on its way to $1 billion. The Bros have a clear runway ahead of them and will branch out into the Middle East, Korea and Japan later this month.
The movie Super Mario Bros is also the world’s highest-grossing video game adaptation of all time, surpassing that of 2016 Warcraft and that from 2019 Pokemon Detective Pikachu. Additionally, it is the #12 studio title released worldwide as of 2019 and one of only 13 studio films released since 2019 to exceed $500 million. Universal has five of them Jurassic World Dominion, Minions: The Rise of Gru, No Time To Die, F9 The Fast Saga and now Super Mario Bros. That’s the most of any studio.
For Universal, Mario and Luigi are directing the world’s tenth biggest animated film of all time.
Abroad are the top 5 markets until Thursday Mexico ($40 million), Great Britain and Ireland ($35 million), Germany ($21.5 million), France ($15.2 million) and Australia ($14.8 million).
