James Gunn discusses Superman: Legacy, Superhero Fatigue, and his hopes for Marvel’s future

One of Gunn’s most notable points in the chat approaching his upcoming Marvel franchise Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is that his upcoming Superman movie, which opens the first chapter in his new DC, will be significantly different in tone than the comic book movies he’s directed recently.

“I learned so much doing this one [Guardians] movies,” Gunn said. “But it’s not like Superman is going to have exactly the same vibe as a Guardians film. It’s actually very different.”

As Gunn focuses on his endeavors as a filmmaker and DC executive, one wonders what he thinks about the direction Marvel is taking and what he hopes for the future of the studio. “I really want Marvel to keep making good movies,” the filmmaker offered, before further explaining that “the blip” (or mass deaths caused by Thanos in Avengers: Endgame) made it “very difficult.

“A global, universal event has occurred. And the truth is, everybody would be completely insane at that point,” Gunn said. “After that it’s hard to write stories. The causes guards Movies were easier because they kind of play outside of it.

Gunn went on to explain that he does not see Marvel and DC as competition, although he now personally runs the latter with Peter Safran. “Honestly, I think the better Marvel movies do, the better for DC, and the better DC movies do, the better for Marvel,” he explained. “When people see bad movies, they don’t want to spend more money to see more movies. So they want good films to be made.

Part of what helps achieve this, Gunn seems to imply, is recognizing that “there Is something like superhero fatigue, although it actually has nothing to do with superheroes.

“It has to do with the type of stories that are told, and if you lose the ball, it’s character,” Gunn continued. “We love Superman. We love Batman. We love Iron Man. Because it is these incredible characters that we hold in our hearts. And when it just turns into a bunch of crap on the screen, it gets really boring. But I’m sick of most spectacle films, the drudgery of not having an emotionally grounded story.”

Gunn’s third and last guards The film, which follows the half-human, half-alien Peter Quill aka Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) and his band of intergalactic criminals, is out May 5. And Gunn recently tweeted that while the film is nearly two and a half hours long, “not a second is wasted. There is no fat. It was necessary to experience the entire arc for every major Guardians character, no not just for this film, but for the trilogy (or, should I say, trilogy plus).

The filmmaker also recently took to the social media platform to quash rumors about Logan Lerman playing Superman in his title Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, which is due out on July 11, 2025. Actors about the role,” he wrote. “Just make private lists, prepare audition material.”
