Maia Kealoha’s film career is picking up speed. Deadline has confirmed that the newcomer has been cast as Lilo lilo and stitch Disney+’s live-action version of the 2002 animated picture from Hawaii.

Kealoha’s cast is reminiscent of another Polynesian-focused Disney film from 2016 Moiana, in which Hawaiian-born then-rookie Auli’i Cravalho was chosen to portray the protagonist of the fictional island of Motunui.

Dean Fleischer Camp – fresh off an Oscar nomination for Marcel the shell with shoes – will direct the film, which also stars Zach Galifianakis. It follows the relationship between a lonely girl named Lilo and Stitch, an alien creature believed to be a destructive force.

Chris Kekaniokalani Bright wrote the screenplay for the new film, based on an earlier draft by Mike Van Waes. Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich will produce for Rideback, while Ryan Halprin will executive produce for the company.
