The film is set in Element City where a myriad of different elements live and work including air, earth, water and fire. Ember is described as “a witty and fiery woman who always stayed close to home in Firetown.” But, when she meets Wade, her eyes are opened to a whole new world.

In the story, Ember “finally ventures out of her comfort zone to explore this spectacular world born from the imagination of Pixar filmmakers and purpose-built for the big screen experience. Element City is inspired by great cities around the world and embraces the theorized contributions of each elemental community, from giant pine-like buildings and cascading skyscrapers to a tornado-shaped arena called Cyclone Stadium.

Joining the previously announced voice cast included Leah Lewis AND Mamoudou Athie as are Ember and Wade, respectively Ronnie del Carmen as Ember’s retired dad-to-be, Bernie; Shila Ommi as Ember’s love-seeking mom, Cinder; Wendi McLendon-Covey as Wade’s blustery boss and Air-Ball lover, Gale; Catherine O’Hara as Wade’s welcoming mom, Brook; Freemason Wertheimer as Ember’s admired Earth neighbor, Clod; AND Joe Pera as an overgrown city bureaucrat, Fern.

The film is directed by Peter Sohn (The good dinosaur), and offered some insight into where this idea came from:

“The idea [for Elemental] started with my parents. As immigrants to the United States from Korea in the 1970s, they had no family, nothing. But they managed to make a living here in New York and, just like them, many people left their people and families in a new land, with hopes and dreams, mixing cultures, languages and neighborhoods.

“We were among many families who ventured to a new land with hopes and dreams – all of us blended into a big salad bowl of cultures, languages and beautiful little neighborhoods. That’s what brought me to Elemental.”

He went on to explain:

“I married someone who wasn’t Korean, and there was a lot of culture clash in my world with that. And that led me to this idea of finding opposites. And the question arose of what would happen if fire fell in love with water. As an animator, what a fun world to play with… so fire and water are one thing. But then tying it into culture clash was part of that metaphor. And then in that world, all of a sudden this idea of sacrifice and understanding what our parents had given started making the soup of what this movie is all about.

The film was produced by Denise Reampga and executive producer of Peter Docterwith a script by John Hoberg AND Kat Likkel AND Brenda Hsueh with the story of Sohn, Hoberg and Likkel and Hsueh. The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack was composed and conducted by Thomas Newman.

The film will be released in theaters on June 16.
