Renfield director Chris McCay shared a very interesting little detail about his upcoming horror comedy Renfieldwhat stars Nicolas Cage like Dracula. He revealed that the film is a “direct sequel” to Tod BrowningThe 1931 movie Dracula! McKay dropped this funny news during an interview with Collider saying:

“I guess you might argue about Dracula’s daughter it’s a sequel because the opening scene is in the aftermath of the Tod Browning film, but Bela Lugosi isn’t there, it’s a whole different set of characters. It’s a great movie, it’s wild if you haven’t seen it. But for me, this is the only real direct sequel with Dracula and Renfield to that movie.

“So yeah, I wish they’d use that in marketing. I think that would have been a fun way to position this movie. The longest time between the original movie and the sequel, beating Psycho or whatever.”

I think it’s kind of funny that McKay made this movie as a direct sequel Dracula! Knowing this will add an incredibly fun element to the story as I watch it unfold. The disappointing thing is that most of the public don’t even realize this is the case because most people don’t see this kind of information on the internet.

The film is also the protagonist Nicholas Hoult (Mad Max: Fury Road, X-Men franchise) as Dracula’s faithful servant, Renfield. Here is the synopsis of the film and I have also included a new promotional spot:

Evil doesn’t last forever without a little help.

In this modern monster tale of Dracula’s loyal servant, Nicholas Hoult (Mad Max: Fury Road, X-Men franchise) plays Renfield, the tortured aide to history’s most narcissistic boss, Dracula (Oscar® winner Nicolas Cage). Renfield is forced to procure his master’s prey and do his every bidding, no matter how degraded. But now, after centuries of servitude, Renfield is ready to see if there is life outside the shadow of The Prince of Darkness. Him if only he could figure out how to end his codependency.

The film also stars Awkwafina (Farewell, Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings), Ben Schwartz (Sonic, the afterparty), AND Adrian Martinez (The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Focus).

Renfield will hit theaters on April 14, 2023.
