With some of the highest numbers in the entire series, ‘The Last of Us’ season 1 finale was a hit, for both HBO Max and fans. And is that the closing of the adventure with Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey was just as satisfying as in the video game. However, the showrunners reveal that they originally had an alternate ending for Joel and Ellie.
In a new interview for GQ, screenwriter Ali Abassi, who also directed the latest episode, revealed the alternate ending of ‘The Last of Us’: “I thought I’d do this version that’s a little longer and sadder where Ellie says ‘ok’ and then turns and walks away. And Joel follows her. We see them walking, not quite together but apart, towards Jackson. He stayed like that and then vanished. There was something beautiful about that.”
HBO showrunners Graig Mazin and Neil Druckmann say they talked a lot about closing Ellie’s story arc and provided more details the original ending of ‘The Last of Us’: “There’s something very specific about finishing that close-up of Ellie. Not knowing what comes next. Not knowing what she is doing. You walk away from him, walk with him, how does it feel? That moment is definitely suspended”.
Recently, Bella Ramsey spoke with entertainment tonight towards the end of ‘The Last of Us’: “Ellie would surely have sacrificed herself, for her this is her purpose, this is the reason she is alive. I don’t think she would have thought twice, she would have done it instantly. Something that we will certainly see the consequences of in the second season of the series.

‘The Last of Us’ Season 2 Might Avoid the ‘Time Skip’
Those who have played the video game will know that from the end of the first part to the beginning of the second game there was a time jump in Ellie’s life. Mazin told Collider (via The Direct) that he has a few ideas for the HBO adaptation, and one of them could be to avoid the “time jump” and redraw the entire Ellie adventure in a way that will surprise even moviegoers. players.
“Obviously. I don’t want to specify anything. Obviously, the time jump is important, up to a point. It reflects the changing nature of Ellie’s relationship with Joel, as she gets older. In the game, as you point out, it ranges from 14 to 19 , I think,” said Mazin. “But no, we won’t be jumping to the ‘Dragon House’. They were very significant age jumps and we don’t have them. Therefore, no recast will occur. Not on my watch.”
Mazin references the 10-year time jump from the sixth episode of “House of the Dragon”. Which suggests that the story will be told with a focus on flashbacks more organically. At present, ‘The Last of Us’ season 2 does not have a release date, but it could start recordings later this year 2023.
