There are enough cult films in the film industry, however, not all of them have managed to be equally good while remaining in the public taste and collective memory. Some of them even were considered the worst and “Plan 9 from outer space” is one of themAlthough not the only one, but by far ranked as the worst in the entire history of cinema.
‘Plan 9 from Space’ has the virtue, or the misfortune, of being a cult film released in 1959, but it was not good for that, according to the preferences of the public, it is the worst in the history of cinema. Here it is important to remember that although this Ed Wood production is unforgettable, it is not good at all and to achieve this position, the taste of the public influences a lot, which ultimately is who decides what to see.
Of course, one of the main factors leading to ‘Plan 9 from outer space’ to be considered the worst film in the history of cinemaIt’s the very low budget it was made on. In his time, audiences dismissed the cast’s performances as poor and the special effects as rudimentary; We’re talking 1950s, nothing new in the industry.

“Plan 9 from Outer Space” is a 1959 science fiction film directed, produced and written by American director Ed Wood.. The film is known to be one of the worst cinematic productions ever, due to its production errors, ridiculous dialogues and unconvincing performances.
The plot of the film revolves around some aliens who arrive on Earth with a mission to stop humans from building a powerful weapon that threatens to destroy the entire universe. To achieve their goal, the aliens resurrect the dead on Earth and turn them into zombies to create chaos and confusion among humans.
The cast included names of film veterans of that time such as Bela Lugosi and Vampira, although Lugosi died before filming had wrapped and was replaced by a stunt double. The special effects are rudimentary, with flying saucers suspended from ropes and explosions made by firecrackers. The film is also notable for its continuity errors, with scenes changing from day to night and back again within seconds.
Although “Plan 9 from Outer Space” was a critical and commercial flop in its time, it has become a cult film and has inspired many filmmakers to create low-budget science fiction films.
We’re talking about a fairly dated film and, therefore, it’s already in the public domain and among the platforms to watch it we find YouTube, MUBI, among others. And of course you can find DVD or Blu-Ray editions online, even some physical stores will certainly have some available. If you want to see what bad cinema of that era was like, ‘Plan 9 from Outer Space’ should be on your list.
