Another sign of Marvel’s return to China after a long drought, Disney/Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is scheduled for a daily release on May 5th. The series finale, directed by James Gunn, will hit North American theaters on the same day, while the international launch begins on May 3. (Check out the new Chinese poster below.)
It is the third Marvel title to hit theaters in China after three and a half years in which no film featuring a Marvel character made it into the world’s second-largest box office market. Last month Disney/Marvel’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever And Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania became the first titles since Sony/Marvel Spider-Man: Far From Home in June 2019 and Disney/Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame in April of the same year.
Not one Wakanda forever ($15.6 million) yet Quantum mania ($39 million as of last Sunday) was busy filming Chinese pivots in February — the former has been out since November 2022 elsewhere and the latter has been plagued by poor early reviews, Chinese New Year chatter and the burden of being the first new Marvel film intended to get audiences back into the habit. General and beyond avatar: the way of water, Chinese audiences have been lukewarm to Hollywood films of late, but there is hope.
The guards Movies have had strong, if not explosive, business in China in the past. The original earned just over $86 million at 2014 exchange rates, and the sequel earned nearly $101 million in 2017, also at historical rates.

Recently, China has been handing out more and more daily releases for Hollywood titles, including Quantum mania, Shazam! wrath of the gods (starting on Friday – which means today – at the market), Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves on March 31 and The movie Super Mario Bros (also with Pratt) on April 5.
