Through his Twitter account, James Gunn has confirmed he will be directing ‘Superman: Legacy’, the new Man of Steel film that it was only known that he would be the writer. A few days ago, ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ screenwriter Tom King said that the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ director would be taking over the position, and now it’s 100% official.
In the mail, James Gunn writes: “Yes, I will direct “Superman: Legacy”.’, which will be released on July 11, 2025. My brother Matt told me when he saw the date and broke down when I asked him why he was doing it: ‘It’s Dad’s birthday.’ I hadn’t noticed. I lost my father almost three years ago. He was my best friend. He didn’t understand me as a kid, but he was always supportive of my love of comics and I wouldn’t have made this movie without him.”
In the Twitter thread, James Gunn confesses he was offered a Superman movie a few years ago, which he turned down “because he didn’t have a unique, funny, exciting way to give Superman the dignity he deserved,” wrote the director. But he was finally convinced: “Less than a year ago, I found a way, one that focuses on Superman’s ancestry, how both his Kryptonian aristocratic parents and his Kansas farmer parents shaped him to be what is and make the decisions that you make.”

James Gunn prepares a younger version of Superman
After rebooting the entire DCEU with ‘The Flash’, Henry Cavill, the events of ‘Justice League Snyder Cut’ on HBO Max and Clark Kent’s cameo in ‘Black Adam’ will be completely removed from the new DCU timeline. . With this, James Gunn confirmed that “Superman: Legacy” will star a younger actor than Cavill, with whom they will be able to work for many years.
And that’s not just that, because they’re hoping “Superman: Legacy” showcases the character in a more empathetic and hopeful way than Snyder’s seemingly mature version. That’s why they’re looking for a young actor who can reflect all that the character means and was lost during the EUDC.
‘Superman: Legacy’ will be released on July 11, 2025, the same year as ‘The Batman – Part 2’, which means that the biggest characters in DC history will get a new iteration on the big screen, to test the mandate by James Gunn and Peter Safran at the helm of DC Studios.
