Pakistani activist for education and women’s rights, Malala Yousafzai, was present at the 2023 Oscars awards ceremony, many wondered why his presence was due, since he does not belong directly to the film and entertainment industry. The 25-year-old girl has arrived accompanied by her husband, Asser Malik, since then was nominated for ‘Stranger at the gate’a documentary that brought her here, but that for a moment could have faded into the background due to Jimmy Kimmel’s inopportune jokes.

It is not the first time that Jimmy Kimmel has presided over the Oscar ceremony, in this, which was his third intervention, he performed unfortunate monologues such as remembering the mention of Will Smith, and even question Malala Yousafzai on a topic that has little to do with Harry Styles and an incident she had with her partner, fellow actor Chris Pine.

The Oscars host addressed Malala directly, who was in the audience, and pointed out that she had an exclusive question for her, from “Joanne from Brooklyn, New York,” wondering if what Harry did to Chris was appropriate or notto which the activist limited herself to responding awkwardly, an act immediately criticized on social media by Internet users.

Your work in human rights, education for women and children is an inspiration. As the youngest Nobel laureate in history, do you think Harry Styles spat on Chris Pine?” Kimmel asked Malala.

Malala Yousafzai was uncomfortable with the type of question which was done to him, limiting himself to a very brief response, and avoiding entering into controversies that do not go hand in hand with the movements he undertakes to promote peace in the world and activism in favor of women.

I speak only of peace,” Malala replied.

To which Jimmy Kimmel deftly replied, “You know what, that’s why you’re Malala and no one else is.” However, the discomfort had been caught on camera and noticed by thousands of people around the world who were quick to criticize the driver’s question.

Jimmy Kimmel was referring to the incident that happened during the premiere of ‘Don’t worry darling’ at the Venice International Film Festival, where in a moment, while Chris Pine is seated, Harry Styles arrives to take his seat and apparently spits on his feet.

Internet users and journalists called Kimmel’s jokes towards Malala inappropriate and disrespectful. While the young woman took advantage of her social networks to give a message accompanied by a video in which she posted the phrase: “Treat people with kindness”.
