With Scream VI which takes place in New York City, it should come as no surprise that one of the films that the directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin AND Tyler Gillette looked for inspiration from the 1989 horror film era Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan.

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, executive producer Chad Villella confirmed that he and the directors have “studied” Jason takes Manhattan before going into production. villela said:
“Oh, we definitely researched that and wanted to make sure we didn’t get a boat in this! We wanted to be in the city, in the lived part of New York, which was very important to us. Of course, being in a city is a scary thing. With Woodsboro (the setting of most of the previous Scream movies), you can be isolated very easily, but in a city you could be surrounded by millions of people and still feel very alone. This is exactly what we wanted to capture with this one.“
Not only was it Scream VI inspired by Jason takes Manhattan, but the filmmakers also planted an Easter egg in the film. During an interview with Bloody-Disgusting, Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett were specifically asked about that Easter egg being prominently displayed. Bettinelli-Olpin says:
“I think it’s funny; it was really serendipitous, actually. We kept making jokes, of course; from the first time we read the script, Jason Takes Manhattan was part of the conversation. But we never got a place in the movie to really call it. So what are you talking about, we had a list of Paramount films that they owned that we could use in the film. The moment we saw it, we were like, ‘Oh, there it is.’ It all worked out.
Gillett went on to add, “That was the lowest fruit and, often, you don’t want to pick the lowest fruit because it seems too obvious, and then you see it, and then you’re like, ‘Well, there’s no better choice.’” Bettinelli -Olpin adds, “…if you get it, you get it. It lets you know you’re in for a fun ride.”
THE Jason takes Manhattan The Easter egg is in full view at the beginning of the film. Did you get it when you first saw the movie!? I didn’t get it until my second viewing so keep an eye out for that Jason takes Manhattan homage inside Scream VI! It’s really not that hard to miss since the movie is being played on a TV.
The next chapter in the horror saga “continues with the four survivors of the Ghostface murders as they leave Woodsboro behind and begin a new chapter.” They try to start this new chapter of their lives in New York City, and well… things are not going too well for them as Ghostface is back in action and on a rampage in the city.
