James Gunn responds to racist comments about Chukwudi Iwuji in ‘Guardians 3’: ‘I don’t give a damn about his ethnicity’

The end of “Guardians of the Galaxy” is approaching. Nearly ten years after the release of the first film, James Gunn’s Weird Little Galactic Family will release the next May 5 ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ to say goodbye. But before the sad farewell, during the almost two and a half hours that the longest film of the trilogy could last, we’ll see new additions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe such as High Evolutionary.

James Gunn responds to racist comments about Chukwudi Iwuji in ‘Guardians 3’: ‘I don’t give a damn about his ethnicity’

Two months after the release of the film, Gunn posted on Instagram a photo of the character played by Chukwudi Iwuji, accompanied by the phrase “I can’t wait for you to meet this guy”, unaware that its publication would become a battleground. A troll commented “Shit…another white boy gets turned black”adding that: “Why couldn’t they just leave it white or I don’t know… pick another minority? How about an Asian or a Latino! (How many Latinos are in the MCU? A total of 5?) Either make them Hindus or something… they don’t and won’t, because that makes them “liberal.” Next time the protagonist (hero or villain) will be trans or gay, or non-binary (when in the comics they aren’t). Sad and pathetic. They are choosing based on race and what is politically correctand not in doing or in what is established”.

The director could not resist and saw the need to respond by saying that: “I picked the best actor and the best person for the character, period.. I don’t give a damn about Chukwudi Iwuji’s ethnicity, so stop your racist presumptions about WHY he was elected. (And by the way, he plays a guy who’s mostly purple)”as in the comics the High Evolutionary is a purple android.

Narcissistic and sociopathic but charming

So far Iwuji has not commented and aside from comments on the skin color The High Evolutionary will have in the film, in an interview with Collider a year ago, Iwuji said of the character: “He’s narcissistic, sociopathic, but very charming. I couldn’t have thought of a character to use [un] best skill set to join the MCU”. She pointed out that it’s because she has something “very Shakespearean”adding that the character is not only funny, but also “there is something emotionally very dark about him”. Iwuji placed particular emphasis on the costume in which he appeared at the 2022 San Diego Comic Con, noting that “a big part of my acting is the costume”.
