John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) will star in a science fiction film project by Birds of prey director Cathy Yan titled The Refresh. The project is inspired by a story by Rachel Kong published in the Paris Review.
The story is set in the near future “where tensions over race and gender have reached a violent extreme and the US government institutes a public health initiative known as ‘The Freshening’: Every American gets an injection, after which everyone they see others only as the same race and gender as themselves.”
The film will follow “what happens when a street drug enters the picture, promising a chance to see the world as it is, and a newly met Sam and Reese (Boyega) must decide whether to disrupt the ‘refreshed’ world?”
Well, that sounds like an interesting and wild and unique story. Sounds like a story you would see The twilight zone. The film is produced by FilmNation Entertainment, Ali WangHyperobject Industries’ Adam McCay AND Betsy Kochand Yan and of Rewild Ash Sarohia.
The producers said in a statement, “We are extremely excited to have John bring this complex character and story to life and we can’t wait to begin filming with this incredible group of like-minded creatives.”
Director Yan added, “It’s a dream to work with John Boyega, a singular talent whose commitment to his craft and willingness to take risks have produced such far-reaching and memorable performances. I know it will bring incredible depth and nuance to Reese. I’m thrilled that he’s ready for this wild ride.
Filming on the project is expected to begin later this year and they are in the process of filling in the rest of the cast.
