In the commemorative framework of International Women’s Day and a struggle that embraces every day of the year, ‘Ellas hablan’ joins the list of films, series and documentaries with a feminist perspective. It is a film inspired by true events that portrays a group of women from a Canadian colony, with their own customs.

It’s no news that movies inspired by true events have filled the big screen and streaming services in recent years, and always have. In your case, ‘They talk’, is the reflection of hundreds of women’s stories who belong to marginalized communities, who suffer and experience gender-based violence.

It’s a production Directed by Sarah Polley, which is inspired by the novel of the same name, written by Miriam Toews. Both, prominently, talk about a real event that happened with eight women, all of different ages, who were raped within their Mennonite community in 2010, by men.

Within the storyline, the films present the story of these eight women, who, among themselves, find solace and solace to lean on. Gathered in the barn, they think they need to trust themselves more, in their power as individuals and as part of a highly abused community.

Although ‘Ellas hablan’ actually shows an inspiring and comforting side to women, and becomes an 8M worthy film, it also brings to the screen the cruellest and most realistic side of the story: violence against women within an oppressive society .

‘They Talk’ hits theaters

‘Ellas hablan’ is a women’s film, made for womenand which reaches selected cinemas with a luxury cast made up of Rooney Mara (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), Claire Foy (The Crown), Jessie Buckley (The Dark Daughter), Judith Ivey (What the Deaf Hears), Sheila McCarthy (I hear the sirens sing) and Michelle McLeod (Don’t talk to Irene).

After a life full of violence, this group of women, and how scared they were, are faced with the decision to stay in their Mennonite community in Bolivia, or face the reality of starting a new path with the strength that the group musters by being women, creating a better future for them.

Also, this film with a feminist perspectiveit’s nominated for an Oscar in two categories: Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay, and as far as the good critics and reviews it received, experts believe it deserved more nominations at the Academy Awards.
