Nicolas Cage he’s one of the funniest actors working in Hollywood today, and he’s truly a national treasure. He’s had such a wild career, and he’s still going strong! He recently accepted the Variety Legend & Groundbreaker Award at the Miami Film Festival and, in his acceptance speech, reflected on many of his past projects, including films that never came to fruition such as Tim Burton’S Superman lives. He also talked about Marvel, saying:

“I have to be nice to Marvel movies, because I named myself after a Stan Lee character named Luke Cage. What am I supposed to do, put the Marvel movies aside? Stan Lee is my surrealist father. He called me. I understand what the frustration is. I understand. But I think there is plenty of room for everyone. I’m watching movies like “Tár”. I see all kinds of arty and independent films. I think there’s plenty of room for everyone.”

When asked if he wanted to join the MCU, he got the perfect Nic Cage answer: “I don’t need to be in the MCU, I’m Nic Cage.”

As for Superman lives, which is one of those legendary unrealized Hollywood projects that fired the imagination of fans. It’s a project we can’t help but be curious about, it’s one we would have liked to see done, but at the same time, the thought of what could have been is all we need.

Speaking about the film, Cage shared how he came up with the project and how he was the one who took on it Tim Burton to direct it. He said:

“They wanted Renny Harlin to make the film. I sat with Renny. I was shooting another photo, she came to the trailer and we talked. I liked Renny… but I figured if I was going to do that, he’d be such a target to hit. I said, this must be Tim Burton. I called Tim and said, ‘Would you?’ Tim didn’t choose me, I chose Tim and Tim said yes. I loved what he did with Michael [Keaton] and Batman, and I was a huge fan.

He went on to talk about why the movie never got made, and while he doesn’t know for sure, he thinks it might be because of Burton’s problem. Mars attacks box office bombing:

“I love Mars Attacks. I thought Mars Attacks was just a great, groundbreaking movie. He’s a revolutionary! But they were scared in the studio because of Mars Attacks. Warner Brothers had lost a lot of money on the film. These movies that are really weird and that challenge and lead the way piss off a lot of people. I think they have cold feet. They’d already spent a lot of money building the sets and the costume and whatnot. But you never know. I don’t want to be cryptic Cage, but you never know!

He went on to talk about the version of Superman they were developing for the film saying, “He was more of an 80s Superman with the long black samurai hair. I thought he was going to be a really different emo Superman, but we never got there.

I remember when the first photo of Cage dressed as Superman surfaced. The fan community is erupting with all kinds of emotions. This was followed by more photos and even test footage. There has even been a documentary made about the unmade film called The Death of Superman Lives: What Happened?!

When previously speaking about the film, Cage explained why Superman lives is more powerful than any other Superman film: “I would offer that the film that Tim and I were going to make, in your imagination, is more powerful than any other Superman film. I didn’t even have to make the film and we all know what that would have been movie in your imagination. That’s the Superman. This is the movie. Even if you’ve never seen it, it’s the Superman.”
