ELDEN RING “Shadow of the Erdtree” DLC Officially Announced

Video game developer FromSoftware has officially announced the long-awaited Elden Ring the expansion is coming and the DLC is titled “Shadow of the Erdtree.”

The announcement came following a tweet that reads “Rise up, clouded, and let us walk a new path together. An upcoming expansion for #ELDENRING Shadow of the Erdtree is currently in development. We hope you look forward to new adventures in Middle-earth.”

I spent a lot of time playing Elden Ring since I’ve gotten a copy of it, and the game is incredibly fun and frustrating. It’s such a well designed game and it will be exciting to see what this new DLC has to offer.

The new expansion will be available for PS4 and Xbox One, as well as current-gen systems and PC. Unfortunately, there are no details on what the DLC will entail. All we really have is the title and the image that was shared above. Everything else is just speculation.

One thing many fans believe is that the figure to the right of the image above is Miquella. The character never appears during Elden Ring, but Sir Gideon Ofnir confirms that the character is alive and encased in a cocoon. Thus, there is a possibility that “Shadow of the Erdtree” could take place after the events of Elden Ring, where Miquella finally breaks free from her cocoon.

Here are some details on the lore of the character:

Miquella, brother of Malenia, is one of the Empyreans. Cursed to be forever young, he created the Haligtree to allow him to grow into an adult and to purge the rot from Malenia. This was after realizing that the Golden Order was unable to cure Malenia of the rot.

“One of the incantations of the Golden Order fundamentalists. A gift of gratitude to young Miquella from his father, Radagon….. Yet young Miquella abandoned fundamentalism, for he could do nothing to cure the accursed rot of Malenia. This was the beginning of unalloyed gold.” – Radagon’s rings of light

Before she could grow the Haligtree to its full potential, Miquella was kidnapped by Mohg, Lord of Blood, in her cocoon form. Mohg desired that Miquella be elevated to godhood with himself as Miquella’s consort. However, no matter how much blood Mohg tried to share with Miquella, Miquella doesn’t talk back to Mohg. Lore-wise, Sir Gideon Ofnir confirmed that Miquella is alive because one must be alive to sleep. Gideon’s aforementioned comment about Miquella’s sleep is consistent with cut content suggesting that Miquella is in her dream world, and this may explain why Mohg received no response from the physical body he abducted from the Haligtree.
