Daisy Ridley she’s had steady work over the past few years, but will likely always be best known for her role as Rey over the past few Star Wars Skywalker Saga trilogy. Though the films have strong critical reviews, they have been known to not be regarded fondly since Star Wars world of fans. The biggest complaint seems to be the coherence of storyline between the three films. So while they may have merit individually, they haven’t served up the character arcs as fans had hoped.

But Ridley did her best to stay away from the hate that made her way as she made movies, and recently told Rolling Stone that she completely withdrew from social media and stayed away from the internet for a while after shot the movies, but people would still be so bold as to talk to her on the street and be mean to her about the movies!

The funny thing is, because I don’t read stuff and haven’t been on social media in a while, when I was referring to how people can have great opinions about it, random people on the street would be so open with their opinions and I’d say , I am fine. I don’t need to hear it. Cold. Great. As a person, whether I like a movie or not, I would never walk up to a person and say, “I hated your movie.” Because I am a human being. It was probably more gendered than I knew.

The interviewer said that after talking to some of the other cast members, it was clear that the women and people of color in the cast definitely had the worst of it when it came to criticism. They said they were shocked when they wrote a piece praising Rey’s character The force awakens and the feminist direction the film was taking, received some pretty wild hate mail. And that was just for writing something about it. Ridley replied:

Yes. Luckily I haven’t read anything. I think there is so much vitriol out there that I haven’t needed to read about it. I recently felt for Moses Ingram and felt he was comparatively much worse for other people. I don’t think it’s just fandom. Everyone feels the need to say everything they feel, and I don’t know if everyone does.

Ridley added:

And it’s one of those things where there’s no point in fighting, because people will think what they think. So for me, I’m going to continue to do work that I think speaks to people, men and women, and if people don’t like it, then they don’t like it.

Good for her. It doesn’t really matter in the long run what a small group of people in a role that she’s done with and that she’s moved on thought of her. It seems like she has a great perspective on her career and the projects she intends to work on in the future.
