Cinema has put into images what it means to be a mother, from many points of view, and in horror, it’s not the first time that we’ve talked about it. ‘Rosemary’s Baby’ or ‘The Babadook’ have already done it, but now comes a psychological and Mexican horror that offers a much deeper, but also more controversial vision for certain sectors. It is “Bonesera”.
After going through several festivals, ‘Bonemaker’ was released in cinemas on February 23, and it quickly became one of the most viral tapes of the moment. Although, as always, there are many who are reluctant to believe that, being a national film production, it does not have the necessary quality of the big Hollywood productions, but the truth is that it is quite the opposite.
And even more surprising to know that ‘Bonemaker’ It is director Michelle Garza’s first film.graduated from the Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfica, and which has been praised in festivals such as Morela, Tribeca and others, where it has been compared to some classics of the genre, such as the aforementioned ‘Rosemary’s Baby’ by Roman Polanski, ‘ The Babadook ‘ by Jennifer Kent or ‘Hereditary’ by Ari Aster.
Michelle Garza Cervera herself explains the story of her own work (via Cine Premiere): “Huesera is a film about a woman’s trial during your first pregnancyin which a macabre entity begins to torture and interrogate her to know whether or not she wants that domestic life,” quotes the Mexican director.

What is the story of ‘Huesera’ about?
‘The Bone Woman’, as it is also known in English, stars Natalia Solián, Alfonso Dosal, Sonia Couoh, Mayra Batalla, Enoc Leaño, Samantha Castillo, among others. The story follows Valeria, a woman who has an ideal marriage with Raúl, and who has tried in every way to become a mother. The couple wants at all costs to have a child, but they have not been able to have that happiness.
From here things start to get weird, because one day they succeed, Valeria gets pregnant, but that’s just the beginning of their worst nightmares. Well, after giving birth, a sinister entity enters their lives, to endanger everything they’ve built and, worst of all, their child. And for this, the protagonist enters a dark world to be able to face the threat.
Michelle Garza acknowledges that the story of ‘Huesera’ reflects a bit of her own life and childhood story, and towards its end, some of the things that come to pass will be the most controversial of the genre for many years. Therefore, we may be faced with an instant classic, or one of the most controversial films, but only time will tell.
