Time was pressing for Samuel D. Hunter, and in that dark time “I just wanted to write something from a terrifying and deeply personal place, a gay growing up place in northern Idaho in the ’90s,” he told The Credits. But the problems started when he withdrew from people after moving to New York.

“Once I left, I moved to New York, where it’s relatively safer to be gay. But he hadn’t processed the past. He didn’t fit into the gay community’s ideas of beauty. I did well in school and worked hard, but was isolated. I spent a lot of time in my bedroom self-medicating with food and put on a lot of weight.”

Once Hunter got his play to debut, Darren Aronofksy was in the audience at one of the screening nights, and was so moved that he met with the playwright to discuss how to bring his story to the big screen. Now, “The Whale” is one of the 2023 Oscar nominees, and Brendan Fraser is the best actor nominee of the night.
