‘Starsky and Hutch’, the legendary series of the 70s, will have a new remake with a female role

It’s been four seasons and more than fifty years since we were introduced to Daniel Starsky and Ken Hutchinson, the hilarious cop duo from the series “Starsky and Hutch.” Now, in mid-2023, Fox Entertainment president Michael Thorn announces in The Hollywood Reporter a new remake of the iconic seventies series.

‘Starsky and Hutch’, the legendary series of the 70s, will have a new remake with a female role

Desert City was the setting that David Soul (“Strong Harry”) and Paul Michael Glaser (“When You Least Expect It”) protected during the four years that the series has been on the air. The police couple’s service ended in 1979 when, fictionally, they were unjustly jailed for a murder they had never committed. The remake is produced in the same place, but with a substantial twist.

Sasha Starsky and Nicole Hunt they will take the place of the characters of Soul and Glaser. The daughters of the original police tandem will try to solve the injustice committed to their parents by ensuring safety in Desert City. The gender change of the protagonists is part of the reinvention that Fox wants to bring to this new face of ‘Starsky and Hutch’. A new air for a series which, in addition to completely changing its cast, will also have to reset the foundations of its humor, adapting it to new times and circumstances.

Still it is unknown who will embody the new police force. Thorn tells THR that he still needs to read scripts prepared by showrunners Elizabeth Peterson (‘The Resident’) and Sam Sklaver (‘Prodigal Son’) to ignite the final green light for a project that promises to come back strong.

It’s not the first remake

The characters created by William Blinn were not only played by Soul and Glaser. Tod Philips brought the cop duo to the big screen in 2004 with ‘Starsky and Hutch’. Philips used the screenplay by Stevie Long (“Sons of Anarchy”) and John O’Brien (“Crazy Curves”) to distribute the film which grossed over $170 million at the box office, according to Box Office Mojo. While not considered a particularly memorable achievement in Phillips’ filmography, Owen Wilson and Ben Stiller’s performance in the film certainly is. Wilson’s long blond hair and Stiller’s pseudo-afro have remained imprinted in the collective imagination as one of the most colorful police couples in Hollywood cinema.
