The next chapter in Jones’ story is set in 1969 and Indiana Jones “lives against the backdrop of the space race, but the American effort to beat the Russians to the moon brings with it some uncomfortable truths for Indy.”
As I speak to THR, Director James Mangold opens up about what makes this iteration of the character so different and one thing he wanted to show in this film was how the world around the legendary archaeologist has changed. He said:
“The first three Indiana Jones movies took place around the same time. All easily adapt to the serialized, theatrical, almost demented style of the films released in the period in which they are set. [director Steven Spielberg] ON [Crystal Skull], and for me on that, it’s: How do you move forward into the new decades where the world is no longer seen in such clear demarcation of black and white, good and evil? Where the whole concept of raiding tombs and fighting for relics is seen in a different way? It’s not about changing the story, it’s about allowing the character to experience how the world around him has changed.”
Since the film is set in 1969, James says it gives the story a chance to better explore how soldiers of fortune like Indiana Jones are no longer seen entirely as heroes. Mangold continued to speak about the gray area of the time, saying:
“And our perception of politics is grayer. Who is a villain? Who are we working with? Who are we fighting against? Proxy wars, all of that. It’s not as simple as it was around WWII. What happens to a hero built for a black and white world when he finds himself in a gray one? It’s a problem that produces humor, produces contradictions, produces adaptations that this character will have to make.
We learn in the film that the moon landing program was run by a group of ex-Nazis and this gets under Jones’ skin. He’s a man out of time, and it’s explained that: “It’s not just that the model of what a hero is has completely changed. It’s not just that they’re looking for something where there’s nothing up there – it’s like Reno without the gambling, or whatever his line is. But the people behind it are, you know, his sworn enemies.
The film comes from the producer Steven Spielberg, and is also the protagonist Mads Mikkelsen (one more round), Phoebe Waller Bridge (Lots of fleas), Boyd Holbrook (Logano), Shaunette Renee Wilson (The resident), AND Thomas Kretschmann (The Avengers: Age of Ultron).
The film will be released in theaters on June 30, 2023.
