A Netflix film predicted the Ohio catastrophe: a train derails and pollutes the air with chemicals

Sometimes fiction crosses the screen and reaches the real world. ‘Background Noise’, the Netflix Original Movie, is the latest example of stories we never expect to cross the fourth wall. This movie did, and with a verisimilitude almost worthy of being called divination.

A Netflix film predicted the Ohio catastrophe: a train derails and pollutes the air with chemicals

‘Background noise’ predicts one of the worst environmental catastrophes in American history. “Mini Chernobyl,” as it has been dubbed in the press, occurred on February 3 in the state between the Ohio and Pennsylvania borders. A train carrying chemicals derailed causing a fire which, in addition to not ceasing for hours, poisoned the air and rivers in the area.

The disaster occurs a month and a half after ‘Ruido de Fondo’ has seen the light. In Noah Baumbach’s film this story has already been told: a train leaves the tracks, even very close to Ohio, leaving a deadly trail of contamination. The similarity is such that members of the ‘Background Noise’ team share their amazement.

“A train carrying toxic chemicals derailed and started a fire in eastern Palestine, Ohio on February 3, prompting evacuations and a federal investigation. There are now concerns about the environment and the transportation network.”

Ben Ratner, who participated as a displaced person in the drama, experienced the two versions of the story very closely. Ratner told People about the tragic event, now yeah, the real thing, that It happened a few kilometers from his home: “It’s such a scary situation… It can drive you crazy thinking how eerie the similarities are between what’s happening now and what’s happening in the movie”said Ratner.

After experiencing this bad joke twice, Ratner doesn’t want a third one to happen, not even watch the movie: “I tried to watch the movie a couple of days ago and couldn’t […] It’s not something I wanted to have fun with, because for us it’s a real-life situation.”comments the helper.

It has been written since 1985

Although the film was released in December 2022, the omen had been written since 1985. “Background noise” it was the book adaptation namesake of the American writer Don DeLillo.

In 2022 the film with Adam Driver (‘Marriage Story’), Greta Gerwig (‘The Shape of Water’) and Raffey Cassidy (‘Vox Lux’) was released. Bumbach brought to the big screen this black comedy that it would show how the Gladney family tries to survive and recover their lives after an ecological catastrophe that would take away any hope of recovering the order of their day.
