The first Red Band trailer for Kurt Wimmer’s remake of Stephen Kings children of the corn has fallen and is full of gory imagery, murderous children and of course eerie cornfields.
Based on King’s short story adapted by Wimmer, children of the corn follows a 12-year-old girl in Nebraska who is possessed by a ghost in a dying cornfield. She recruits the other children in her small town on a bloody killing spree, killing all adults and anyone who opposes her. One smart high school student who doesn’t go along with the plan is the town’s only chance for survival.
The story was originally brought to the big screen in 1984 in a version more faithful to King’s short story. It focused on an adult couple who wandered into town, discovered the massacre and became the next adult target of the pre-adult crowd. It starred Linda Hamilton and Peter Horton.
Children of the Corn II: The Last Sacrifice was released in 1992. Later episodes – there were at least five – went straight to video and had little or no story continuity starting with CChildren of Wheat III: Urban Harvest 1995. In 2009, a second adaptation of the short story aired on the Syfy network. A third amendment entitled Somply children of the cornwas released in 2020.
Wimmer’s film was picked up last month by RLJE Films and the AMC network’s horror streaming service Shudder. The movie opens in theaters on March 3 for an 18-day theatrical run before being released on demand and digitally on March 21.
Photo stars Elena Kampouris (Before I fall), Kate Moyer (station eleven), Callan Mulvey (The gray man) and Bruce Spence (The Street Warrior).
The film is produced by Digital Domain and directed by Lucas Foster (disease), Doug Barry (FML) and John Baldecchi (break point). The visual effects are all produced in-house by Digital Domain.
