It’s a shame what Warner Bros. ended up doing Adil El Arbi AND Billall Fallah’S Bad girl movie. I would have loved to see that, but it’s going to happen at this point. All we have from it is what the cast and crew revealed as they talked about it, and today we have some real story details to share regarding the film’s villain, Firefly.
These details come from the actor Brendan Fraser, who plays Firefly in the film, and when he appeared on The Howard Stern Show, he was asked about the film. Before talking about his character, though, he shared his thoughts on the version of Gotham City that we would see in the film saying:
“Yes, it was great. Adil [El Arbi] and Billall [Fallah], who made the movie Bad Boys, are really good at blowing shit up and they love doing it. You know, like the practical effects of fire making things explode, they’re all over the place, and so Firefly is right in their wheelhouse. Gotham has never had a better cast like Glasgow, Scotland. You know it’s decaying and it’s just gorgeous. It looks like it’s Gotham City. It’s perfectly melted. You believe it wherever you look at the city, if you light it in the right way”.
He then went on to talk about Firefly’s history in the film and what kind of villain he is:
“It was a story about a guy who had been in service and had his benefits cut and he was very angry at the system and what else was he going to do but burn it to the ground. That’s all you need to know. That’s a supervillain right there. You have some sympathy for him. You also have some humanity in him and a loose screw on top of that because you know he’s the bad guy, but he really likes all the best bad guys, you like them a little bit. That was this role. On paper very very good. I enjoyed that part.”
It seems that Fraser would have played a big and complex villain. I hate that we will never see his version of this villain! I bet he gave a fantastic performance. When previously talking about the film, Leslie Grace offered some interesting insight into the practical effects of fire and fighting Fraser saying:
“I really had one [the best] experiences with Batgirl. In terms of the shooting experience, we were all so excited for people to see a lot of the action, a lot of the hands-on shooting that we did with fire. Our film was filled with practical fire, which was really hard to shoot. Brandan [Fraser], our villain, our Firefly, was so awesome. I felt so lucky to have him as my sparring partner. We had so many great action scenes together where we were hitting each other, but hugging each other between takes because he’s so sweet.”
I’m sure some of the footage from this film will leak out and see the light of day one day, but we’ll never get to see the polished finished product.
