Brendan Fraser’s career was full of ups and downs, when many believed he could become the new Hollywood blockbuster actor, his profile started to deteriorate. Now the actor of ‘The whale’ returns to talk about one of the reasons that prompted him to move away from the cameras, his relationship with the former president of the Foreign Press Association, responsible for the Golden Globes

In a recent interview with GQ, Brendan Fraser has insisted he’s not interested in the Golden Globes, this is because a few years ago, the protagonist of ‘The Mummy’ was abused by Phillip Berk, the former president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. For this reason, at the past Golden Globes, Fraser announced that he would not attend the event.

And while he was also nominated for his performance in ‘The Whale’, Brendan Fraser says he’s not interested in the Golden Globes: “I found myself wondering if this is a cynical nomination. I really couldn’t tell because of my history with them and that I have yet to see the results of their reform. We’re all still waiting for him, actually… The important thing is that it doesn’t mean anything to me. I do not want it. I didn’t even ask to be considerate that’s what I was supposed to. They needed me, I don’t need them.”

But despite it being a controversy that many movie actors and actresses are familiar with, Brendan Fraser doesn’t ask for sunburn with him: “It’s my fight, no one else’s… I don’t need everyone to show me solidarity… Maybe. But, you know, that would be a leap of faith for anyone. It would be a calculated risk and could also be trivialized very easily for the cynical view of it all. Honestly, I don’t even want to think too much about it because it’s not that important to me.”

Brendan Fraser and his controversy with Philip Berk

The Golden Globes and the HFPA aren’t the first time they’ve been embroiled in a scandal, as they’ve been linked to sexual assaults in recent years, as well as instances of racism, among many other things. Brendan Fraser talks about a reform, which aims to change its members, managers and various relevant members of the organization, which is still ongoing.

In 2018, Brendan Fraser first spoke about an event that happened with Philip Berk in 2003. The actor claimed that the newly elected HFPA president groped his butt inappropriately. Berk pointed out that it was a joke, something Fraser disagreed with. Finally, Berk was fired from office, after two other cases of racism and corruption.

In 2018, Fraser said the HFPA investigated the issue, but did not provide details of its findings. Although the moment was one of the darkest in Brendan Fraser’s career, the actor is now preparing for the nominations for the next Oscars, where he got a mention in the Best Actor category for ‘The Whale’.
