From screen to stage. ‘Star City: La La Land’ may not have won the Best Picture Oscar, but it has remained in the collective memory of cinephiles ever since we fell in love with it in 2016, and time has only solidified it. Now, the Damien Chazelle film will expand as a Marc Platt Broadway musicalfamous Broadway producer and one of the film makers.

The project, which is still in its initial phase and it is not known when it will go on stage, is officially underway and the first names associated with it are already known. Bartlett Sher (‘To Kill a Mockingbird’, ‘Fiddler on the Roof’) will direct the adaptation, with a screenplay by Ayad Akhtar and Matthew Decker. Oscar winners Justin Hurwitz and the tandem Benj Pasek and Justin Paul will return to take care of the songs. Since this is an expansion of the film, it is expected that they will be a combination of the themes that can be heard in it – iconic numbers such as ‘Another Day of Sun’, ‘City of Stars’ or ‘Audition (Fools Who Dream)’ – and new songs.

The musical will follow the same storyline as the film starring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, about an aspiring actress and a jazz musician who fall in love in Los Angeles while chasing their dreams. “I am very excited to reconnect with Lionsgate and the incredible team behind ‘La La Land’ to adapt the film for the stage, the next chapter in its evolution”Platt says in an official statement published in Variety. “We have assembled a world-class team to create a musical that will delight millions of “La La Land” fans and introduce the property to new audiences”.

Although this time it is a real musical, it is not the first time that ‘La La Land’ expands on stage, as there is a concert version of the film, entitled “La La Land in Concert”, which has been successfully performed worldwide since 2017.

From the blockbuster in theaters to the Oscargate

The case of ‘La La Land’ is one of the most memorable in recent Hollywood, both for its popularity among the public and for the anecdote in which it played at the Oscars when it was erroneously announced as Best Picture, an award that actually belonged to ‘ Moonlight’. Nonetheless, the Oscargate hasn’t dampened audiences’ love for the film, if anything, it has intensified it even further. That night, “La La Land” earned six Academy Awards out of 14 nominations, including Best Director for Chazelle, Best Actress for Stone, and both music awards. These awards were the finishing touch to a flawless business trip, with 447.4 million dollars worldwide, making it one of the most successful movie musicals of recent years.
