Disney names its five-time Oscar nominee Black Panther: Wakanda Forever the most-watched Marvel premiere of all time on Disney+ worldwide. Without providing ratings, the company said Monday the claim was based on the number of hours the photo was streamed in the first five days.
The Ryan Coogler-directed sequel, which grossed $842.3 million at the worldwide box office, was released on Disney+ on February 1 after an 83-day theatrical run.
Meanwhile, Samba TV, which measures viewership across a panel of 3 million US smart TVs, says the Live+4D household viewership was 2.1 million.
That’s a remarkable number, with a 400% lead over the same frame Black Adam‘s 1.5 million subscription to HBO Max, as does Disney/Marvel Studios doctor strange in the multiverse of madness, and just below that of Thor: Love and Thunder (2.2 million).
From the above films Black Panther: Wakanda Forever most overindex among Black households (+44%), Hispanic households (+27%) and mature 20-24 year old Gen Z households (+9%).
The most important thing: Windows works. Compare that to the day-and-date numbers of Disney’s Labor Day 2020, which hits theaters mulan (1.12 million), Disney/Marvel’s black widow in July 2021 (1.1 million weekend per samba) and jungle cruise (777,000) – Granted, they were both available at an additional pay level on Disney+.
Cole Strain, VP Measurement at Samba TV, said: “Just as box office records were broken last year, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever caused a stir when it debuted on Disney+ as 2.1 million US homes streamed the highly-anticipated sequel to the cult film with an all-star cast.
“Black households watched more often Black Panther: Wakanda Forever than other current superhero franchises including Batman, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Thor: Love and ThunderAnd Black Adam. There was a significant 44% overindex of the average American household among black households, based on Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Viewership ratings in the first five days that surpassed those of the other films. The Black Panther Sequels also caught fire with younger viewers, including Gen Z households who were nearly 10% more likely to tune in compared to the average household,” added Strain.
“The Black Panther Franchise continues to make history not only for Outstanding Actress Angela Bassett’s first Oscar nomination and win for Marvel Studios, but also [also] the diverse show both on and off the screen, which overstated black household viewers by strong double digits,” the Samba manager continued.
Samba TV collects viewership data through its own automatic content detection technology on subscribed smart TVs. Integrated at the chipset level into 24 of the world’s best smart TVs, Samba TV’s ACR captures content appearing on the TV screen, regardless of the source. This leads to unbiased viewer insights around the world; Samba TV’s 3M Smart TV Research Panel is weighted and weighted by the US Census for age, gender, race and household income.
In contrast, Samba TV’s panel is nearly 80 times larger than Nielsen’s household area of 45,000 households. Samba TV does not estimate mobile viewers. Samba TV measures at the household level and does not extrapolate to individual viewers. This is an important distinction when, for example, numbers are published by individual streamers reporting at the viewership level.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever received Oscar nominations for VFX, makeup and hair styling, costume design, Rihanna’s original song “Lift Me Up” and supporting actress Bassett.
