Amazon Studios has finalized a deal for the streamer to develop a series based on the Criminal comics from Ed Brubaker. The best-selling detective comic series, drawn by the artist Sean Phillipswill be executive produced and showrun by Brubaker.

Details about the project are limited, but the series is described as an interconnected universe of crime stories.

Brubaker explained to Deadline in a 2019 interview:

Criminal tells the saga of the intertwining of several generations of families bound together by past crimes and murders. And one of the big events in the past of many of these characters, which is referenced from the very beginning Criminal story, was the death of Teeg Lawless. Before we even met Teeg, we knew he had died when his son was a teenager, but aside from the identity of his killer, we never told the rest of that story. He’s just a ghost haunting the show, as Teeg Lawless has become one of the most popular characters in comics.”

Brubaker is primarily known for his multi-layered episodic detective sagas. Brubaker and artist Sean Phillips spent fifteen years creating a massive body of highly sought-after original work for adaptation. Their series Criminal, Undercover, Fatal, The fade out, AND Kill or be killed they have sold millions of copies internationally.

As a television writer, Brubaker served as a production supervisor at HBO Western world, and, with director Nicolas Winding Refn, co-created Amazon’s Too old to die young, the first streaming series to debut at Cannes. He recently worked at Disney+ The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and was co-showrunner of Batman: Caped Crusaderthe animated series from executive producers Bruce Timm, JJ Abrams and Matt Reeves, which had a direct series order from HBO Max and Cartoon Network.
