“The Phantom of the Opera” tops the Broadway box office;  “The Piano Lesson” ends on a high note

The evergreen The skim of the opera was again the top show on Broadway last week, earning $2,483,532 for the week ending January 29, beating out second place Funny girl ($1,872,862) and Hamilton ($1,871,921) by a noticeable margin.

The Andrew Lloyd Webber musical at the Majestic has enjoyed a remarkable revival of interest (and box office) since announcing a closing date last year (its last performance in 35 years is April 16). earlier this month, ghost reported its 20 millionth audience since opening in 1988.

In total, the 23 Broadway shows remained on the shelves last week and earned $25,705,039, with an attendance of 206,578 at a roughly 94% seat load. The average ticket price for all shows was $124.43, reflecting the discounted prices of some shows during NYC Broadway Week’s annual promotion (which runs through February 12).

In the last week of August Wilson’s presentation The piano lessondirected by Latanya Richardson Jackson and starring Samuel L. Jackson, John David Washington and Danielle Brooks held a whopping 99.8% of the seats at the Ethel Barrymore Theater and earned $1,259,306 for A Good Farewell – The highest grossing non-musical production of the week.

The gross is a clear reflection of mr. Wilson’s power and legacy combined with LaTanya Richardson’s vision for a new version of Jackson The piano lesson which will live on for a new generation. The number is proof that Broadway offers space for great artists to take the stage, tell the truth and share the story, and make the general public listen. It was the greatest honor of my life, both mr. Wilson and LaTanya Richardson, to produce Jackson’s Broadway debut as a director.”

Other productions that grossed at least $1 million were & Julia, A Beautiful Noise, Aladdin, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, MJ, Moulin Rouge!, Six, The Lion King and Weak. Most productions played to at least 90% capacity Some love it when it’s hot bringing the back to 77%.

The only preview program photos from home starring Nathan Lane, Danny Burstein and Zoë Wanamaker, sold about 97% of its seats at Studio 54 and earned $457,276 that week. It starts on February 9.

In the season to date, Broadway has grossed $1,088,419,044 with a total admission of 8,378,601 at an approximately 87% seat load rate.
