It’s been over 10 years since DreamWorks’ green ogre hit the big screen and fans are still asking for the fifth ‘Shrek’ movie every day. Now, Eddie Murphy has said that he’s willing to return as Donkey in a potential new installment.

In an interview with CTV E-Talk, Eddie Murphy has said he wants to participate ‘Shrek 5’, if DreamWorsk is willing to make a new franchise film at some point. The actor and comedian clarifies his love for the saga and asks the company to give cinema’s most famous ogre a new opportunity in a new main film, “I would do it in two seconds”.

“Oh, I would be absolutely open. If they ever invent another Shrek, I’d do it in two seconds. I love donkey. I wish they would.” Murphy also asks for the Donkey character, starring Eugenio Derbez in Latin America, has a spin-off: “They made the Puss in Boots movies, I thought ‘They should have made a donkey movie, Donkey is funnier than Puss in Boots!’ I mean, I love Puss in Boots, but he’s funny as a donkey.”

This means that Eddie Murphy wants a solo Donkey movie, after seeing the success of ‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish’ (which will arrive in February on Amazon Prime Video). It is worth mentioning that DreamWorks has raised the fifth installment of “Shrek” on several occasions, and the most recent is the one that seems to be reaching a good moment, but nothing is confirmed yet.

“Shrek 5” may be on its way

Jeff Shell, CEO of NBC Universal, said the launch of ‘Puss in Boots: Death Wish’ gave the company a boost: ‘And right now, Puss in Boots (The Death Wish) , which is a huge box office hit and really our return to the Shrek universe, continues to make that acquisition really favourable,” he told The Hollywood Reporter.

The success of the movie starring Antonio Banderas proved that the franchise is still going strong, even after more than 10 years have passed since the last ‘Shrek’ movie. And not only that, recent rumors claim that DreamWorks is also preparing a live-action ‘How to train your dragon’, which would confirm the company’s good condition.

Everything indicates that, if everything continues like this, the “Shrek 5” rumors that have been coming out for 13 years could finally come true. With that, Eddie Murphy is all but certain to return as Donkey, however, we’ll have to wait until DreamWorks confirms development on the film.
