Successful shows can last decades and, in the animation industry, even longer. Fox announced it (via Deadline). will renew three of its great animation jewels, in itself one of the longest-running in the American market, for at least two more seasons. The news shouldn’t come as a surprise, given that it’s ‘The Simpsons’, ‘Bob’s Burgers’ and ‘Family Guy’, a stellar trio that made a profound impact on animated sitcoms.
The renewal means that episodes of these favorites will continue to arrive in 2024 and 2025. ‘The Simpsons’, which has been in existence since 1989, will celebrate seasons 35 and 36, while ‘Family Guy’ will have seasons 22 and 23 and ‘Bob’s Burgers’ will have seasons 14 and 15, however enviable figures .. Michael Thorn, president of content development and programming at Fox Entertainment, says this shows “the animation genre’s enduring power over our network and fans’ undying affinity for these outrageously funny comedic classics”. The three series are in the top 10 comedies for the 2022-2023 season: it is the second consecutive year that ‘Bob’s Burgers’ is on the list, with ‘The Simpsons’ and ‘Family Guy’ occupying the fourth and fifth positions.
On the other hand, Fox has decided to continue promoting other animated series, such as ‘The Great North’ while planning to launch them soon two productions still in progress: ‘Grimsburg’ and ‘Krapopolis’, the latter by Dan Harmon, creator of ‘Rick and Morty’ and ‘Community’).
Meanwhile in Japan…
While the three animated series are certainly big milestones in our culture, compared to other markets the numbers seem tiny, especially in Japan. The longest running Japanese animated series is ‘Sazae-San’ which has been airing since 1969, while ‘Doraemon: The Cosmic Cat’ started in 1979. It is followed by ‘Shin Chan’, ‘Pokémon’, ‘Detective Conan’, the two parts of ‘Naruto’ and ‘One Piece’, known for its proliferation, although its number of chapters is close to that of ‘The Simpsons’ and It has much to envy to the one that leads the list, which has more than 8,000 chapters..
