Getting into a TTRPG is a large investment of time and money and therefore it can be very difficult to be willing to try a new system. Whether you want to try playing a tabletop RPG for the first time, want to dip your toes into a new system for fun, or are looking to switch systems because your current favorite game’s company is extremely problematic, I have a tip for you. Search and use the quick guides. A quickstart is a document that typically contains the basic rules of the game, a short adventure, and pre-generated characters. The best part? Quick Start Guides are usually free!
The Quick Start Guides are designed with the express purpose of getting you to try the game and hopefully get hooked so you can purchase the full rules and supplements. Think of them as free samples at the food court. You can try that system your friend keeps begging you to try without any monetary investment with everything you need to play a session or two (depending on how long your group meets). As we speak, I’m actually picking out a quick start guide to go through and prepare for in case my regular GM isn’t quite ready to resume our usual campaign. The adventure is planned out, a lot of clutter has been cleared out, and my friends don’t have to create characters and worry about all those rules. It seems perfect for someone who has very little time to prepare.
Please note that not all games/systems have a quick start guide. An alternative that some games use are beginner boxes/guides which are very similar to quick start guides but cost a bit of money although are usually considerably cheaper than buying the basic rulebook.
Below you can find a list of games with links to their quick guides that I’ve found. The links below are affiliate links that support GeekTyrant if you use it. Also, feel free to share your favorite systems with quickstarts in the comments below.
