Maturity and adolescence is something that everyone is going through or has already gone through at some point in their life. Therefore, it is a very important stage in human development. And since a lot can be learned from cinema, these dramatic films speak of maturity and adaptation to changes that for many can be a bit overwhelming, and not only distressing.
One of the best drama films about adaptation to change is ‘Edge of Seventeen’, a comedy-drama directed by Kelly Fremon and starring Hailee Steinfeld opposite Woody Harrelson. The story is about a young woman who has trouble relating to others, and the worst of her comes when her brother starts dating her best friend. Available on Netflix.

In the same tone, but with a musical twist, we have a drama film that perfectly portrays coming of age. This is ‘Moxie’, directed by Amy Phoeler, and starring Josephine Langford, who brings to life Emma, a shy 16-year-old girl who rebels against what is socially accepted, and now she will no longer accept inequality , sexism and favoritism at her school. One of the recent coming-of-ages that won the Oscar in 2022 was ‘Coda’, a pdrama film about maturity and adolescence Ruby, played by Emilia Jones. The girl is the only person in a deaf family who can hear, and her passion for music puts her in the position of having to choose the family business, or follow her true dream. Partly inspired by Cyrano de Bergerac’s short story of the same name, we have ‘The Half of It’, or better known as ‘If you only know’, by director Alice Wu. It’s about Ellie (Leah Lewis) a shy young woman who helps a friend write letters to the girl he likes, but doesn’t know that her friend is also in love with her. Available on Netflix.

With a touch of science fiction and fantasy, we have ‘Spontaneous’, a drama directed by Brian Duffield and starring Katherine Langford and Charlie Plummer. It’s about Mara and Dylan, two friends living in a time when high school students start to explode spontaneously, and both must find a way to survive. Available on Netflix.
The advantages of being invisible
Finally, with the lead role of Logan Lerman, Emma Watson and Ezra Miller we have the classic “The Perks of Being Invisible”. The story follows Charlie, a boy with social problems, until he meets two boys who help him discover his first love, music, friendship and many other things that come with adolescence. Available on Netflix, Claro, Lionsgate and Amazon Prime Video.
