James Cameron talks about the difference between AVATAR and superhero movies

Director James Cameron has strong opinions on almost every aspect of cinema and movies, and her last opinion she wants to share is how different her Avatars movies are of the superhero genre. To some it may seem so Avatars could easily fall into the same category, with its blue alien race, heroes and villains, and out-of-this-world visuals. But Cameron wants to clarify the difference.

In a recent interview with Korean film critic Dong-Jin Lee, the director explained:

“It’s not like a superhero story where there’s a new villain in every movie. Same guy, right? Same adversary for the whole thing. But how he evolves is also very interesting once we introduce other adversaries as we go along. More adversaries and more allies.”

Sure. Although there are Marvel and DC villains who have repeated themselves in storylines, we happen to watch these characters for longer than just a five-film arc from start to finish. Cameron went on to talk about the future of the franchise, saying:

“It looks like just with the momentum the movie has now it’s going to easily break even in the next few days, actually, so I can’t seem to get myself out of this one, I’m going to have to do these other these other sequels,” Cameron revealed. “And I’m sure we’ll have a discussion soon, you know, with the top people that Disney talks about, you know, the game plan for Avatar 3, which is already in the can that we’ve already captured and I’ve photographed the whole movie. And then avatars four and five are both written, we’ve got some fours in the jar as well.So you know, I think we can see that I think we’ve started a franchise at this point.

When asked if Cameron was sad that more of his projects probably would never come to fruition because he was consumed with it Avatarshe replied:

“Not that bad. I mean, I understand this and I understand the quirks and the variables and you know the old expression you know, man proposes God arranges you never know exactly what’s going to happen. I also believe in planning for the bright side it’s not enough make a jerky Herky movie and then wait to see what happens, but plan for the bright side and then accept it if it doesn’t work.

Are you happy to have three more? Avatars James Cameron movie? Avatars 3 is currently scheduled for release on December 20, 2024, Avatars 4 on December 18, 2026 and Avatars 5 on December 22, 2028.
