Michelle Yeoh was a winner at the Golden Globes on Tuesday when she received the trophy for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for her work on Everything, everywhere, all at once.

The star took the stage at the Beverly Hilton and reminisced about her journey to Hollywood. After receiving the trophy on stage from host Ana de Armas, Yeoh said: “I’m just going to stand here and take it all in. Forty years, don’t let it go.”

“It’s been an incredible journey and an incredible struggle to be here today, but I think it’s been worth it,” she said. “I remember when I first came to Hollywood it was a dream come true until I got here. Because look at that face, I came here and I was told, ‘You’re a minority.’ And I say: ‘No, it’s not possible’.”

Yeoh continued, “And then someone said to me, ‘You speak English.’ I mean, forget they don’t know Korea, Japan, Malaysia, Asia, India… And then I said, ‘Yeah, it took about 13 hours to fly here, so I learned it.’

The actress said she turned 60 last year, noting that “as days, years and numbers get bigger, the odds seem to get smaller.”

Yeoh said she was about to give up after “having a really, really good run” with Steven Spielberg, James Cameron and Danny Boyle, “then came the best gift – Everything, everywhere, all at once.”
