Dave BautistaHe’s acting career got a huge boost playing Drax in Marvel Studios’ The Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. But, while he’s grateful for the opportunity to play Drax, he’s also relieved that his time as his character is over. During a recent interview with GQ magazine, he says he doesn’t want this silly performance to be his legacy. He explained:

“I’m so thankful for Drax. I love. But there is a relief [that it’s over]. It wasn’t all pleasant. It was difficult to play that role. The make up process was getting me down. And I don’t know if I want Drax to be my legacy — it’s a silly performance and I want to do more dramatic stuff.

Bautista is exiting the Marvel Cinematic Universe, like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 it marks his last film as Drax the Destroyer, a role he’s been tied to for nearly 10 years over the course of seven different MCU projects.

The actor has expressed his frustration with the role in the past with how Marvel “dropped the ball” in terms of doing Drax justice on the big screen. He always wanted to see more of the character:

“Personally I wish they had invested more in Drax. Because I think Drax has more than one story to tell. I think Drax has a really interesting backstory, that they’ve dropped the ball on. It’s not a dig at Marvel. They had their own whiteboard, I know what they focus on, that’s what they have [it] scheduled. But man, I think they really lost the ball on Drax. He has such a great story.

“Selfishly, as a performer, this would have given me the opportunity to show different sides of Drax, emotionally. And physically too. Because, if you notice, Drax, even though he looks tough, you look at him and he looks terrifying, but Drax gets his ass kicked more than any other Marvel character… the window… people have fallen so in love with the side Drax comic that they tapped into that, then they tapped into it more, then they really dug a hole in it. But we’ve lost a huge boat on that character and I don’t think he will ever come back. But I’m really looking forward to finishing the whole trip.”

I agree, Drax has an incredibly interesting backstory, and it’s something they’ve never really touched and explored.

The actor has certainly had the opportunity to take on a good amount of dramatic roles since playing Drax in projects like Dune and the imminent M. Night Shyamalan movie Knock on the booth. She has also recently starred in Rian Johnson’S Glass Onionin which he was very good.

Bautista is now able to shape his career however he wants, and it will be nice to see what kind of roles he ends up taking on in the future.
