It is not the first time that Steven Moffat, co-creator of ‘Sherlock’ with Mark Gatiss, sings the same song: only Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman have to say yes. The amazing thing about the matter is that over time this filmmaker does not lose momentum, and almost six years later he still insists that I would gladly address that “Chapter 2” you mentioned at the time.

In mid-January 2017, when ‘The final problem’, the last episode of the fourth season of the series, was only alive for a couple of days; Moffat made that very clear with a resounding one “it depends on our two stars”. Also, at that time, said screenwriter wanted to explain how he imagined the future of ‘Sherlock’, a television drama that “decidedly” he had reached the end… of his ‘Chapter 1’.
“To all of you wondering about the future of ‘Sherlock’: it is definitely the end… of chapter 1. Doctor Watson is now the brave widower described by Doyle and Sherlock Holmes has become the wise and humane version of the main series of stories traced by said writer (until now we have focused on the cold Holmes of the early years). If we ever get to Chapter 2, our kids will consciously live the myth by fighting evildoers, it depends on our two stars. I’d be surprised if we never did “Sherlock” again… But I’ve been surprised before”commented Moffat through social networks (via Digital Spy).
Now, just over half a decade later, the co-creator of the aforementioned modern adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle’s novels, jokes asking Cumberbatch and Freeman to do it “please” I come back. Speaking on the BBC’s Today program (via Deadline), Moffat said so “I would start writing tomorrow” if its Sherlock and Watson decide to come backadding that although they are now busy with projects “bigger and better” I would be happy to returnno. “Martin and Benedict, do you want to come back?”.
chapter 2
If Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman said yes, we would find a whole new stage in “Sherlock”. The detective duo, with the wounds of the past already in remission, would launch themselves into maintaining the dynamic on a case-by-episode basis (judging by what was mentioned at the end of 4×03) but this time they would have to alternate it with a great responsibility that we have already witnessed an appetizer: fatherhood. After the tragic death of Mary (Amanda Abbington) we see how John tries to be the best father possible to the little girl, but it’s not until the end of the last episode when a daily life is established around the routine of Watson’s friends and daughter Rosie. Furthermore, something more remains to be known about Eurus (Sian Brooke), the youngest of the Holmes who seems to redeem herself by playing the violin with her favorite brother.
“The Last Problem” said goodbye to the Domestic Detective Agency located at 221B Baker street busier than ever, so For fans, all that remains is to join Moffat’s plea and hope that Cumberbatch and Freeman miss their respective characters..
