After a glorious 2022, in which titles like ‘Smile’, ‘Barbarian’ or ‘Hasta los huesos: Bones and All’ are at the top of the best horror lists of the year, make it clear that the succeeding genre that follows is more eclectic than never.
Author cinema, commercial proposals that play with the rules and clichés of horror, films released in theaters or directly on platforms, are now in competition with everyone, without (class) distinctions that classify them as more or less intelligent cinema (or elevated, which someone would curse). With that in mind, and yet to find out which films will begin circulating at the midnight sessions at Sundance and South By Southwest (two of the festivals where some of the horror and fantasy trends are set) each year), these are some of the proposals not to be missed in the coming months.

return to the classics
Making it clear that one of the trends of 2023 will be to keep looking to the past, Blumhouse is willing to explore the universe created by William Peter Blatty in a new (and risky) installment of “The Exorcist”. Because, let’s face it: it’s been fifty years since the premiere of William Friedkin’s (immeasurable) film, but taking into account the way new generations consume cinema, this long-awaited reboot could be the way to rediscover the classic from 1973.

5 “Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey”

How is it possible that Winnie the Pooh had a slasher version and Disney did nothing to prevent it? Well, very simple: the character created by AA Milne in 1926 has become public domain in the United States, which is why it can be adapted based on its creator’s illustrations. By the same token, that’s why we won’t get to see Tigger in this grotesque story, since he didn’t appear until 1928 (hence he hasn’t entered the public domain yet).
Who we will see is the pink piglet Pigglet, who accompanies Winnie in her new facet sadistic psychopaths after being dumped by Christopher Robin.

9 “Evil Dead Rise”

Finally comes the fifth installment of the “Infernal Possession” franchise, which will leave behind the cabin in the woods and will look for a new location for its universe: a Los Angeles condominiumwhere two sisters who have just met again must battle against flesh-possessing demons who have been released through an ancient book.
directs Lee Cronin (“Cursed Forest”), who co-wrote the screenplay with Sam Raimi himself.
When? In theaters on April 21st.
10 ‘The Exorcist’

David Gordon Green continues his romance with Blumhouse after heading up the new ‘Halloween’ trilogy, and does so with what is perhaps one of the riskiest projects horror films have faced in decades: a sequel/reboot of ‘The Exorcist’ of which little is known about its plot, except that Ellen Burstyn returns as Chris MacNeil, who in 1973 had to ask for help from two priests to exorcise his daughter.
When? In theaters October 13th.
Others who return are Sam Raimi with the fifth episode of the saga ‘Infernal Possession’, Ghostface trades Woodsboro for New York in ‘Scream VI’, or that contemporary twist called re M. Night Shyamalan.
